Relying on one’s own ability and creativity is a recipe for living below your potential. Know the fuel that powers your extraordinary existence! A few years ago, when I got the inspiration to begin my fashion line, High + Title, formerly called OYÈ Collection, I questioned how in the world it would be a reality, considering my lack of experience in this area. I knew that to be a fashion designer, I needed a way to translate the designs I had in my head into drawings on paper before I could bring those pieces to life. Unfortunately, the best drawing I had ever done close to successfully was a stick figure. Drawing is simply not one of my talents. And as a result, I hesitated from moving forward with the vision longer than I should have due my limitation with drawing, among other limitations of not having a clue about the steps it takes to begin a fashion line. I was afraid to move forward because I didn’t believe I had what it took to make this vision a reality. Then one day, I felt God leading me to just take a basic first step – pick up a pencil and a paper and start sketching. I grudgingly took that step, knowing that I was at the mercy of one who is leading me. After a few failed attempts in my sketching adventure, I finally got a picture that looked like the design in my head that could then be translated into an actual piece. Imagine how excited I was to find out that I could draw something beyond a stick figure! Enjoy my very first successful sketch for High + Title. In this process, I realized that I didn’t have to depend on my ability or skills. Instead, I just had to trust God, take a step in faith, and depend on His ability and creativity to be expressed through me. Many of the inadequacies we feel come from reliance on our own abilities. If we would only stop looking at our limitations and trust the one who is limitless to guide, lead, and help us, we would be amazed at the many hidden capabilities that could be unleashed in us. Our abilities are only as limited or as limitless as the one leading. Who is leading you? Who is the author of your abilities? Are you relying on your own strength or skills, or are you depending on God’s power and abilities to fuel your creativity and life? The creativity that flows from God breaks the barrier of your limitations and unleashes you into dimensions you never thought existed. Let God express His abilities through you. That’s the way to extraordinary existence. And it starts with absolute surrender to Jesus Christ, not as your back up plan but as your only plan. P.S. What you see matters – scar or beauty, blemishes or uniqueness. It is all about perspective. Many of us carry scars that we are ashamed of. They may be physical scars, emotional scars, mental scars, or other unpleasant experiences that linger. For some, it is a past they would rather not talk about. For some, a physical scar that you have been covering or hiding from the world. For others, it could be an emotional burden you have carried for so long. In my book NYTA, I shared my personal...
We live in a culture where we consume more than we create. Yet, each one of us has been created with unique qualities, attributes and creative gifts that -- if unleashed -- would bring flavor and joy to the world. When I obtained my Doctoral degree as a healthcare professional, though it was a great accomplishment that anyone should be proud of, I couldn’t help but recognize the dissatisfaction I still felt. I thought to myself: this couldn’t possibly be all there is to me. In my state of...
The beauty about submitting our plans and vision to God is that there is no limit to how far they can go with Him. Oftentimes, the only limit on our vision is the limit we place on it. But when we give God the open check to do whatever He wants with our plans, we are in for a ride. Is it always going to be easy and smooth sailing? No. Far from it. In fact, there will be days where you might question how you will ever make it through. There might be days where you feel like you are going...
